A Naifa

Crypto-Fado/Portuguese/World

A NAIFA: An original sound, modern and at the same time deeply involved in the Portuguese tradition; a combination that results in an intimate music, where the Portuguese identity is strengthened by its poems written by national authors.
The band, formed by Luis Varatojo (Portuguese guitar), João Aguardela (Bass), Paulo Martins (drums) and Maria Antónia Mendes (voice), edited their first album "Cancoes Subterraneas" in 2004, followed by "3 Minutos Antes de a Mare Encher" in 2006 . The works were acclaimed by the critics and audiences that had the opportunity to see the band live in every city and major centre theatres, concert rooms and festivals all around the country of Portugal. Now, they are ready to confront Canada preparing for a special release of the best of the first two albums as well as a future tour. Stay tuned!

A Safe Way Into the Modernization of Fado

"They can even refuse to admit that it is fado what they play, because it isn’t. But the truth is that Mitó’s voice is the voice of a fado singer, Varatojo plays the Portuguese guitar (even in an unconventional way) and Aguardela gives a swing to the bass as if in search of the old fado. And the truth is that A Naifa was the best thing that ever happened to fado and to its connection to modern times. The new album is another step in search of that modernity, and as wonderful as the first, Canções Subterrâneas. A Naifa’s sound, with its Portuguese poems, is one of the best in Portuguese language.”  António Pires, Blitz

Under the Guitar Sign

“The only Portuguese band that dresses fado up with contemporary sounds, maintaining its coherence and aesthetic interest. If it isn’t the most atypical fado group of all times, it is today’s most Portuguese band. A musical personality so strong that to and similar examples in pop music, we would have to go back as far as António Variações or Sétima Legião. But times have changed and the ingredients set them further apart. A Naifa is a band of the Portugal we have today.”  Manuel Halpern, Jornal Letras
