Sounds from the Island

currently in development

Azores Islands are an autonomous region/archipelago of the country of Portugal located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The islands are rich with culture, history and the unique sounds of their people. With this documentary, the filmmaker pretends to survey the island of Pico -Mountain Island of the Azores- and its people, researching the music and song that is unique to this corner of the world.
The folk music of Pico maintains the melodic lines common to the whole of the Azores, but adds to them a number of harmony-rich modes or songs such as the caracol, larum-tum-tum, majericão and rema, which are danced on feast days. The chamarrita, present in almost all the islands, reaches its maximum vivacity in Pico. The love of music of the inhabitants of Pico is also reflected in the dozens of philharmonic bands, some over a century old that animate the popular festivities with their repertoires. The filmmaker will visit with the traditional groups, interview individuals and search for the new music coming out of the island - from the music rooted in islander traditions to new sounds. The film will also include performances from various groups.
Canadian artist Terry Costa spent his childhood in Pico Island in the Azores. Now, he pretends to capture a part of this magic place by focusing on the music, the sounds of the island; the film will be about the history told using the storytelling methods of the natives and will focus on the current/present day while capturing the hopes for the future.
